Hi y'all! My name is Kaylie Kolenovsky, and I'm a rising junior at the University of Texas at Dallas, working toward a Bachelor's degree in Marketing. I was born and raised in South Texas near the coast, so almost every memory from growing up has been associated with the beach in some form.

I grew up surfing, cheering, and dancing, but now I usually opt for outdoor activities to explore the scenery and reconnect with the calmer lifestyle I grew up in.

How did my roots in a small business lead me to understand the importance of marketing?

I have only had a boss who has been related to me, as I’ve worked at my father’s butcher shop and restaurant, Boarri, since I was 15. By being part of a family business, I have gained a new appreciation for the hard work and passion required to overcome the challenges you will face as you build a brand from the ground up. It has shaped how I think about every business and start-up I have studied, from how a brand earns trust to how it stays consistent across every customer interaction. Our shop has endured many obstacles and celebrated many achievements as we have learned to navigate and establish a brand centered on culinary expertise, community, and genuine hospitality.

Why Instagram is my platform of choice?

With these goals in mind, I've discovered that Instagram is my favorite social media platform to work with professionally - and for good reason.

  • Customization

Instagram has become a way to develop a brand with complete freedom, as you have full range to customize every section of your account to be as engaging and cohesive as possible. This is really important to me, as I helped develop the Boarri brand, and it is important to maintain a consistent theme so that when a customer visits the page, they instantly feel connected to the store. But staying on-brand doesn't mean staying boring.

  • Posting Styles

This year, I have learned how impactful it is to use a variety of posting styles in keeping the audience engaged while also letting them get to know the faces behind the brand. We have recently used reels to provide our customers with “how to cook” videos for different products we offer, including meats, and have made polls to get feedback, so we can focus on building a stronger community to establish loyalty and hospitality.

  • Generational Reach

I love that this app does not exclude any age range. I can connect my post to Facebook to tailor it for the Baby Boomers while still reaching Millennials and Gen Z, who spend their free time scrolling through socials. Cross-generational reach is a great advantage for any business, especially start-ups, enabling them to reach a broader community and drive growth.

Limiting your business to one type of customer means limiting your potential. Instagram lets you meet people where they are, whoever they are.
